- Abstract
- During the period of the second Industrial Revolution(1880-1914) in France, a new group of engineers who worked in high-technology industries with the scientific knowledge and technical competence was formed, independently of the engineers of corps d’Etat. Particularly specializing in physics, chemistry, and electricity, this new generation of industrial engineers came from lower and middle class origins, and was considered up to that moment as one of the most important socio-professonal groups in the country. Thus, this article explores the genesis and process of their socio-professional identity from 1880 to 1914 by examining their education, social origins, professional activities and organizations.
