‘인류세’적 신체변형서사와 휴먼의 임계점─ 토리시마 덴포(酉島伝法) 『개근의 무리(皆勤の徒)』를 통해 ─

Abstract

토리시마 덴포의 『개근의 무리』는 인류세적 상상력이 잘 표현된 작품이다. 이 작품은 나노 기술의 폭주로 인류 문명이 절멸한 ‘포스트휴먼’ 지구를 배경으로 인간 종이 외계생명체의 가축(노예)으로 전락하는 미래까지의 과정을 그리는데, 그 과정에서 인간이 거주하는 환경(에콜로지와 과학기술)의 변화는 인간종의 생존을 위해 그 신체에 근본적인 변형을 요구하고, 그 과정에서 인간과 비인간(유기/무기생명체 및 물질)과의 관계에서 근본적인 변화가 나타남을 그려낸다. 이러한 상상력은 동일본대진재와 후쿠시마 원자력발전소 사고를 배경으로 하면서, 지구온난화와 생명의 집단학살 등에 대한 인류세 담론과 연결되어 있다. 이 작품에서 지구 생태가 대재앙을 맞이한 이후, 인간과 비인간 유기체는 생존을 위해, 과학기술과의 ‘공진’을 통해 다원적 생태에 적응하며 다종 군서하는 모습으로 그려지는데, 이 속에서 인간 세계의 현재적 물질적-의미론적 가치 체계는 기능하지 않으며, 폭력적이고 위선적인 인간중심주의는 해체된다. 이러한 『개근의 무리』의 인류세적 상상력은 현재의 다양한 인류세 담론과 공명한다. 다나 해러웨이의 ‘SF’, 레비 브라이언트의 ‘에일리언 현상학’, 티모시 모튼의 ‘하이퍼오브젝트’ 및 ‘흔들기’ 전략은 이러한 인류세적 위기 상황에 대한 진단과 그 대항 전략으로 평가할 수 있으며, 『개근의 무리』가 그리는 이종(異種) 간 혼효와 변형은 인류세 담론의 종적 다양성과 공생의 윤리와 동일한 맥락에서 상상되는 것이다. 다만 『개근의 무리』는 다종 공생의 세계를 현실 세계의 윤리적 당위로 주장하지 않으며, 냉혹한 결과로서 제시한다는 차이를 보인다.

Sisyphean by Denpow Torishima presents the imagination of the Anthropocene. This work depicts a future scenario when humans will degenerate into livestock (or slave) of extraterrestrial life on the “posthuman” earth, where human civilization has become extinct due to the accident of nanotechnology. In that process, changes in ecology would require fundamental transformation of human body for survival, and such fundamental changes would also appear in the relationship between humans and non-humans. Against the backdrop of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, this imagination is linked to the discourse on Anthropocene, on global warming and genocide of life. This work dismantles the anthropocentric value system and accuses its violent and hypocritical characteristics. This work resonates with various discourses on anthropocene today. Donna Haraway's ‘SF’, Levi Bryant's ‘Alien Phenomenology’, and Timothy Morton's ‘Hyperobject’ and ‘Rocking’ strategies can be evaluated as diagnoses of the anthropocene crisis situations and counter strategies. Hybridization between different species and human transformation in Sisyphean was imagined in the same context as ecological diversity and symbiosis ethics of the Anthropocene discourse.
