Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the factors influencing Baby Boomers’ attitudes toward advance directives (AD). Specifically, the study investigated whether family support mediated the effects of self-efficacy and the perception of a good death on Baby Boomers’ attitudes toward AD. The data were collected using an online survey from August 11 to 13, 2020 targeting 330 Baby Boomers residing in Seoul and Gyeonggi areas. Hierarchical regression and PROCESS macro were used to examine the mediation model. The results showed that Baby Boomers’ attitudes toward AD were related to several factors: demographic characteristics (e.g., gender and having a child or not), AD-related characteristics (e.g., awareness of AD, intention of writing the AD, time to write the AD, participation in AD-related decision-making), and personal characteristics (e.g., self-efficacy and perception of good death). Regarding a mediational effect, family support fully mediated the relationship between self-efficacy and attitudes toward AD, and family support partially mediated the relationship between the perception of a good death and attitudes toward AD. These results suggest that raising awareness of AD and being actively involved in the process of family members preparing for death play a significant role in Baby Boomers having a positive attitude toward AD.
