영화 <리바이어던>에 함의된 권력의 의미와 시민교육적 해석 －윤리적 성찰을 중심으로－

Abstract

우리 사회가 공정하고 정의로운 시민사회로 나아가기 위해서는 권력의 주체로서 개인과 사회가 점유하고 있는 권력의 형태가 어떻게 적용되고 호혜적 관계로발전시킬 수 있는지에 대한 개인적⋅사회적 차원의 윤리적 성찰이 선행되어야 할것이다. 이러한 목적을 위해 본 연구에서는 ‘사회정의와 인권’ 부분의 시민교육수업에서 절대권력의 국가론을 주장한 토마스 홉스의 저서 ‘리바이어던’과 동명으로 제작된 러시아 영화 <리바이어던>을 학습 매체로 선택하여 영화에 표현된 권력의 양상과 지배에 대해 분석하고 권력의 다원성과 시민교육의 의미에 대해 논의한다. 연구 방법은 영화에 함의된 권력의 의미를 분석하는 과정과 시민교육 수업에서 영화 <리바이어던>을 활용하여 시민교육의 교육적 의미를 논의하는 과정으로진행하였다. 수업은 영화를 시청한 후 영화에 대한 관점을 제시하고 비판적 사고와 문제인식을 바탕으로 사회현상에 대해 인식이 확장된 내용과 윤리적 성찰의내용을 작성토록 하였다. 연구 결과 영화 <리바이어던>을 통한 시민교육의 의미는 두 가지로 설명된다. 첫째, 부패한 권력이 만든 사회 시스템에 대한 비판적 사고와 우리 사회가 지향 해야 할 도덕적 가치를 연결 짓는 사고의 사회화 과정에서 사회현상에 대한 인식의 확장을 제공한다. 둘째, 도덕적 가치가 상실된 사회 시스템의 불안정이 인간의 삶을 어떻게 유린하는지 인물들을 통해 공감하게 함으로써 ‘사회정의와 인권’ 에 대한 통찰과 윤리적 성찰의 당위성을 제공한다. 시민교육의 본질은 인간이 사회적 존재로서 어떻게 살아야 하는지 성찰하며윤리적 태도와 도덕적 가치를 실천하는 시민성 함양에 있다. 이러한 측면에서 권력의 지배와 갈등, 폭압과 몰락이라는 부패한 권력의 사회화 문제를 제기한 영화<리바이어던>은 ‘사회정의와 인권’에 대한 시민교육에서 윤리적 성찰과 토론을 통해 고차 사고력과 공감력을 배양하고 시민성 함양의 동기를 부여한다는 점에서교육적 의미를 설명할 수 있다.

In order for our society to move forward to a fair and just civil society, ethical reflection on how the form of power occupied by individuals and society can be applied and developed into a reciprocal relationship should be preceded. For this purpose, the study selects Thomas Hobbs’ book “Leviathan,” which argues for the national theory of absolute power in civil education in “Social Justice and Human Rights,” and the Russian film “Leviathan” as learning media to analyze the power patterns and dominance expressed in the film. The research method was conducted in the process of analyzing the meaning of power implied in the film and in the process of discussing the educational meaning of citizenship education by using the movie “Leviathan” in the citizenship education class. In class, after watching the movie, the perspective of the movie was presented, and based on critical thinking and problem recognition, they were asked to write the contents of the expanded awareness of social phenomena and the contents of ethical reflection. Results, the meaning of citizenship education through the movie Leviathan is explained in two ways. First, the movie Leviathan provides an extension of social phenomena in the process of socializing critical thinking about the social system created by corrupt power and the moral values that our society should pursue. Second, it provides insight into “social justice and human rights” and justification for ethical reflection by allowing characters to sympathize with how the instability of a social system whose moral values have been lost violates human life. The essence of citizenship education lies in fostering citizenship that practices ethical attitudes and moral values while reflecting on how humans should live as social beings. In this regard, the movie “Leviathan” which raised the issue of socialization of corrupt power, such as power dominance, conflict, tyranny and collapse, can explain educational meaning and value in that it motivates higher thinking and empathy through discussion and thinking on ethics in citizenship education under the theme of ‘social justice and human rights’
