고기와 우유, 식탁의 가부장제 - 한강『채식주의자』와 조남주『82년생, 김지영』

약자는 식탁에서 제외된다. 카프카 『변신』에서 벌레는 식탁에 접근하지 못한다. 가족과 함께하는 식탁에서 제외되었다는 그 시점부터 인간은 벌레 취급 당한다. 이 글은 한강의 『채식주의자』와 조남주의 『82년생 김지영』에서, 특히 ‘식사 자리에서 일어나는 성차별’ 문제를 살펴본 논문이다. 『채식주의자』에서, 아버지는 식탁 가장 중앙에 앉아 권위를 나타낸다. 아버지가 좋아하는 고기 반찬이 식단의 중심에 놓인다. 『82년생 김지영』에서는 아들만 분유를 먹을 수 있고, 딸은 분유를 먹을 수 없었다. 번호가 앞에 있는 남학생들이 먼저 식사한다. 여성은 어릴 때부터 19금 유머와 된장녀, 맘충 등 비하하는 소리를 들어야 한다. 『작은 것들의 정치』의 저자 제프리 골드파는 동유럽에서 시민을 위한 교육 현장을 식탁, 서점, 살롱이라는 세 가지 장소로 제시한다. 가장 확실한 교육의 장소는 식탁이었다. 식탁에서 사람들은 겉치레를 벗어던졌다. 특히 가족은 식탁에서 반복해서 식사를 나누며 무엇인 옳은지 토론했다. 『채식주의자』와 『82년생 김지영』에서 제시한 식사 자리에서 일어나는 가부장제의 문제를 극복하여, 사랑과 존경을 나누는 일상과 식사 자리를 생각해본다.
