혐오에서 연대로 - 영화 ‘버든(Burden)’에서 읽는 새로운 가치의 탄생

Abstract

영화 ‘버든’은 KKK단에 속했던 한 청년이 인종 혐오를 극복하게 되는 과정을 다루고 있다. 이 글은 영화 ‘버든’을 통해서 혐오의 특징과 형성 과정을 살펴보고, 혐오 감정이 어떻게 유지되고 전달되는지를 분석한다. 나아가 혐오의 감정을 넘어서 사회적 연대라는 가치로 나아갈 수 있는 방안이 무엇인지를 모색하고 있다. 먼저 혐오는 사회 현상이다. 혐오 현상이 발생하고 반복되는 이유는 혐오를 가능케하는 사회적 조건에서 찾아야 한다. 둘째, 개인적 차원에서 혐오의 원인은 혐오의 대상이 아니라, 혐오하는 주체 자신에게 있다. 셋째, 사회적 차원에서 혐오는 ‘다원화’가 낳는 불안에 대한 부정적 대응의 결과로서 나타난다. 혐오는 자신의 정체성을 타자에 대한 우월감을 통해서 드러내고자 하는 시도라고 할 수 있다. 넷째, 혐오는 과거의 역사와 관습을 통해서 작용한다. 다섯째, 혐오의 극복은 고정된 인식 틀의 균열로부터 시작된다. 타자와 소통하고 경험을 공유하는 일은 굳어진 인식의 틀, 고정된 자아를 초월할 수 있는 계기가 된다. 여섯째, 새로운 가치의 탄생은 ‘타자의 인정’을 필요로 한다. 사회적 연대는 공동의 목표를 실현하기 위해서 서로가 서로에게 필요한 존재임을 확인할 수 있을 때 실현될 수 있다. 이를 위해서 타자를 인정하는 태도가 필요하다. 영화 주인공 버든의 삶은 혐오와 관련된 이러한 과정들을 잘 보여주고 있다.

This paper examines the characteristics and formation process of disgust through the movie "Burden," and analyzes how disgust is maintained and conveyed. Furthermore, it is looking for ways to move beyond feelings of disgust to the value of social solidarity. First of all, disgust is a social phenomenon. Second, at the personal level, the cause of disgust is not the object of hatred, but the subject that hates it. Third, at the social level, disgust appears as a result of a negative response to the anxiety produced by 'pluralization'. Disgust can be said to be an attempt to reveal one's identity through a sense of superiority over others. Fourth, disgust works through the history and customs of the past. Fifth, the overcoming of disgust begins with the cracks of a fixed frame of perception. Communicating with others and sharing experiences becomes an opportunity to transcend a habitual frame of perception and a fixed self. Sixth, the genesis of a new value requires 'the recognition of the other'. Social solidarity can be realized when we can confirm that we needs each other to realize a common goal. For this, we need an attitude of acknowledging the other. The life of Burden, the movie's protagonist, illustrates this process well in relation to disgust.
