김기림, T. S. 엘리엇, 니체 - 김기림의 「아프리카 광상곡」과 엘리엇의 『황무지』에 나타난 니체의 영원 회귀 모티프 비교

Abstract

1920년대 식민지 조선에서 니체는 활발히 수용되었다. 하지만 니체의 사유를 자신들의 문학 텍스트에 버무린 최초의 예술가들은 1930년대 중반에 활약한 정지용, 김기림, 박태원, 이상을 비롯한 구인회 구성원들이었다. 그 중 일본의 니혼대학에서 문예비평론 수학으로 서구 모더니즘 이론에 밝았던 조선일보 사회부기자 김기림은 그의 시사적 안목을 영미 모더니즘 이론 및 니체 사유와 결부하며 나름의 예술적 형상화를 모색하였다. 본론의 첫 장에서 필자는 김기림의 평론과 수필, 초기 시에서 나타난 니체주의 양상을 검토하려 한다. 두 번째 장에서는 김기림의 시 ｢아프리카 광상곡｣을 T. S. 엘리엇의 ????황무지????와 비교하여 두 모더니스트가 니체의 역사의식을 그들의 시에서 어떻게 형상화했는지를 살펴볼 것이다. 김기림은 역사의 수레바퀴 모티프를 활용하여 역사의 파멸을 거친 새로운 역사의 재건을 꿈꾸었다는 점에서, 동시대의 영미 모더니스트 엘리엇과 상호텍스트 관계에 놓여 있다.

Kim Kirim who eagerly introduces the poems and poetics of Western literary modernism to the Korean literary academia among the Nine Members’ Group shows Nichean idea such as eternal recurrence and genealogy in his writings. This sort of the Nichean thought can be also revealed by a English modernist, T. S. Eliot whom Kim Kirim often refers to in his literary criticism on English Modernism. This article examines the Nichean thoughts shown in Kim’s early writings at first. Then, I will compare and contrast Kim’s idea of historical eternal recurrence shown in Kim’s poem “Africa Capriccio” with T. S. Eliot’s sense of history shown in The Waste Land. Both poems share the Nichean perspective of history and genealogy. Kim Kirim and other members of Nine Members’ Group, in particular, Chŏng Jiyong, Park Taewon, Yi Sang initially thematizes Nichean idea in their literary works. Kim Kirim is able to apply Nichean idea to his literary works based on his broad interest in the world everywhere as a newspaper reporter. Also, his academic career studying literary criticism at Nihon University in Japan provides him with the opportunity to understand Nietzsche and the contemporary Western literary modernism.
