구한말 러시아의 한국 고서 수집 양상-러시아 상트페테르부르크 국립대학교와 동방학연구소 소장본을 중심으로-

Abstract

이 연구는 러시아 상트페테르부르크 국립대학교 도서관과 동방학연구소에 소장된 한국 고서의 서지조사를 통하여 그 현황과 특징을 확인하고 당시 한국 고서의 수집 양상을 파악하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 조사 결과 한국 고서는 상트페테르부르크 국립대학교에 84종 847책, 동방학 연구소에 200종 958책이 소장된 것으로 확인되었다. 상트페테르부르크 국립대학교에 소장된 한국 고서를 주제별로 분석하면 사부(史部)는 55종 637책 65.4%로 가장 많았고 경부(經部)는 6종 16책으로 7.1%, 자부(子部)는 16종 107책으로 19%, 집부(集部)는 7종 87책으로 8.3%를 차지하였다. 특히 사부의 정법류(政法類) 자료들은 모두 18종 163책으로 사부분류상에서도 가장 큰 비중을 차지하고 있어 이를 통하여 상트페테르부르크 국립대학이 조선에 파견할 외교관의 양성이라는 기능을 충족하기 위하여 한국 자료를 수집하였던 상황을 파악할 수 있다. 반면, 동방학연구소에 소장된 자료의 성격을 보면 경부(經部)의 책은 27종 100책으로 13.5%, 사부(史部)는 64종 405책 32.0%, 자부(子部)는 23종 78책으로 11.5%, 집부(集部)는 86종 375책으로 43.0%이다. 특히 집부의 소설류(小說類)는 59종 157책으로 가장 큰 비중을 가지고 있는데 이는 당시 조선어와 조선문학의 연구를 목적으로 한 자료 수집의 의도가 반영된 것으로 분석할 수 있다. 구한말 외국인들의 한국 고서 수집이 대부분 한국 문화에 대한 개인적인 관심에서 시작된 것이었는데 반해 상트페테르부르크 국립대학교와 동방학연구소의 한국 고서들은 조선에 대한 정보 수집이라는 외교적인 목적을 가진 정책적인 자료의 수집 양상이었음을 확인할 수 있다.

The objective of this research is to examine the current status and features through the bibliographical studies of Korean rare books owned by Saint Petersburg State University Library and The Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences. As a result of the research, it was confirmed that a total of 84 titles in 847 volumes and 200 titles in 958 volumes were owned respectively by Saint Petersburg State University and The Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences. When analyzing the Korean rare books owned by Saint Petersburg State University per theme, the history category appeared to have the highest number of books with 55 titles in 637 volumes, occupying a rate of 65.4%, 6 titles in 16 volumes in the classics category occupied 7.1%, 16 titles in 107 volumes in the arts and sciences category occupied 19%, and 7 titles in 87 volumes in the literature category occupied 8.3%. In particular, the materials in the political law subcategory within the history category occupied the highest portion with 18 titles in 163 volumes, which suggests that Saint Petersburg State University sought to collect Korean materials to satisfy the purpose of cultivating diplomats to dispatch to Joseon. On the other hand, when examining the characteristics of the materials owned by The Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences, there appeared to be a total of 27 titles in 100 volumes in the classics category occupying 13.5%, 64 titles in 405 volumes in the history category occupying 32.0%, 23 titles in 78 volumes in the arts and sciences category occupying 11.5%, and 86 titles in 375 volumes in the literature category occupying 43.0%. In particular, the subcategory of novels in the literature category appeared to occupy the highest ratio with 59 titles in 157 volumes, which seems to reflect the intent of collecting materials with the objective of studying Joseon language and Joseon literature at the time. The collection of Korean rare books by foreigners at the end of the Joseon period mostly started from personal interest in Korean culture, however, it could be confirmed that the Korean rare books at Saint Petersburg State University and The Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences exhibits a form of collection based on policy reasons for a diplomatic objective for gathering information on Joseon.
