내용분석을 통해 본 사이코패스 관련 언론 보도 실태 및 추세

Abstract

최근 들어 시신 훼손 등 잔혹한 범행 수법을 드러낸 살인범이나 피해자의 고통에 무감각한 성범죄자, 연쇄 살인범과 관련한 언론 보도에서, 이들을 ‘사이코패스(psychopath)’라고 지칭하며 범행 수법과 범죄자 특성 등을 소개하는 언론 보도의 수가 급증해 왔다. 그러나 정신병질(psychopathy) 성향이 높은 극소수의 범죄자들을 설명하는 사이코패스라는 개념이 범죄 관련 언론 보도에 무분별하게 쓰이거나, 실제 사이코패스의 특성과는 거리가 멀거나 한두 가지 단편적인 특성만을 가지고 사이코패스라는 개념을 적용하면서 이에 대한 잘못된 지식을 전달하는 언론 보도 기사의 수가 늘어나고 있다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 사이코패스와 관련된 언론 보도의 내용분석을 통해 어떠한 범죄자 혹은 범죄 유형과 관련하여 사이코패스라는 개념이 많이 사용되고 있는지, 사이코패스의 복합적인 진단 기준 가운데 주로 범죄자의 어떠한 특성이나 범행 수법이 가장 많이 언급되는지, 또한 사이코패스와 자주 함께 쓰이지만 분명히 구분되는 개념인 ‘반사회적 성격 장애’와 관련하여 정확한 지식이 전달되고 있는지를 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해, 2004년 1월 1일부터 2013년 7월 31일까지 국내 언론 보도 중에서 ‘사이코패스’를 검색어로 하여 최종 선정된 총 403건의 언론 보도 내용을 심층적으로 분석하였다. 그 결과, 우선 사이코패스 관련 특정 범죄 사건 언론 보도 가운데 강호순 사건이 총 117건(29.0%)에서 언급되어 가장 높은 빈도를 차지하였고, 다음으로 유영철 사건이 73건(18.1%), 정남규 사건이 40건(9.9%)으로 많았다. 다음으로 범죄 유형 가운데 살인이 총 174건(43.2%)의 보도에서 언급되어 가장 많았고, 그 외 연쇄 살인이 129건(32.0%), 성범죄가 82건(20.3%)으로 뒤를 이었다. 또한 언론 보도에서 사이코패스의 특성으로 언급된 내용을 살펴보면, ‘후회나 죄책감 결여’가 총 136건(33.7%)으로 가장 많았고, 그 다음으로 ‘냉담함 혹은 공감능력의 결여’가 86건(21.3%), ‘자신의 행동에 대한 책임을 느끼지 못함’이 42건(10.4%)으로 나타나, 사이코패스 진단 기준 가운데 극히 일부의 특성만이 언급되는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 사이코패스와 반사회적 성격 장애와 관련하여, 진단 기준과 적용 범위가 다른 두 가지 개념을 서로 동일한 것으로 소개하는 등 부정확한 지식을 전달하는 언론 보도가 대다수를 차지하는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 본 연구의 한계점과 후속 연구에 대해서 논의하였다.

Among the media reports regarding the murderers who show brutal Modus Operandi(M/O) such as mutilating corpse, as well as sex offenders and serial killers who are insensitive to sufferings of victims, the number of newspaper articles referring these offenders to ‘psychopaths’ and introducing the M/O and characteristics of these offenders has rapidly increased recently. However, the concept of psychopath, which pertains to only a small number of offenders, is being used indiscriminately in the crime-related news reports by applying the concept with a couple of fractional features far from the actual concept of psychopath. Consequently, media reports which deliver incorrect knowledge about psychopath are on the increase. Thus, by using a content analysis of media reports on psychopaths, this study explored how the concept of ‘psychopath’ was used in regard to offenders or type of crime, which characteristics and M/O of offenders were mentioned among the diagnostic criteria of psychopath(PCL-R), and whether accurate knowledge about antisocial personality disorder was delivered to readers. In the current study, we analyzed a total of 403 newspaper articles on '‘psychopath’ from January 1st, 2004 to 31st July, 2013. Findings of the current study can be summarized as follows. First, we found that the number of articles on the case of Kang, Ho Sun was the biggest, followed by Yoo, Young-Chul and Jeong, Nam-Kyu. In addition, the type of crime that was most frequently mentioned in the articles was homicide, followed by serial murder and sexual assault. Also, the characteristics of psychopath which were most frequently reported in the articles were ‘lack of remorse or guilt’, followed by ‘callous/lack of empathy’ and ‘failure to accept responsibility for own actions'. Furthermore, it turned out most of the articles delivered inaccurate knowledge, such that psychopath and antisocial personality disorder are identical concepts. Finally, suggestions for future research were made.
