허균 作 「洪吉同傳」의 復原에 대한 試論

Abstract

본고는 국문학의 오래된 논쟁 중 하나인 “홍길동전은 허균이 지은 최초의 한글소설이다.”란 명제에 대해, 사료적 접근을 통해 해명을 시도한 결과물이다. 현재 학계에는 이 진술에 대해 세 가지 입장의 견해가 제출되어 있다. 첫 번째는 위 명제를 전면적으로 긍정하는 것으로 “현전 홍길동전은 허균이 지은 한글 소설이다”란 것이고, 두 번째는 위 명제를 전면적으로 부정하는 것으로 “한글 소설 홍길동전과 허균은 아무런 관련이 없다”란 것이며, 세 번째는 이 둘을 절충한 것으로 “허균이 홍길동전을 짓긴 했을 것이로되, 현전 홍길동전과는 언어적․내용적 차이를 지니고 있을 것이다”란 것이 그것이다. 본고는 「홍길동전」이라는 제명 방식이 허균이 지은 「손곡산인전」, 「엄처사전」 등의 전통 傳과 흡사하고, 그가 立傳한 모든 이들이 사료로 문증되는 인물이라는 점에 착안하여 허균 작 「홍길동전」을 하나의 ‘傳’으로 보는 입장에 있다. 이에 문증되는 범주 내에서 실존인물 ‘홍길동’의 역사적 자취를 살펴 현전 소설 홍길동전에 나타난 주요 화소와 비교해 보는 연구 방식을 취하였다. 그 결과, 허균 작 홍길동전에 ① 서자 모티프, ② 가족 살해 모티프, ③ 사찰 탈취 모티프, ④ 관아 탈취 모티프, ⑤ 율도국 모티프 등이 있었을 것으로 추론하였다. 이런 결론은 극단적인 두 주장 ‘허균이 지은 「홍길동전」은 현전 홍길동전과 같은 것이다.’와 ‘현전 홍길동전은 19세기의 어느 인물이 창작한 것이다’를 절충하는 역할을 함과 동시에, 대다수 연구자들이 견지하는 ‘현전 소설 홍길동전이 후대에 변모한 것이긴 하지만, 허균의 「홍길동전」과 깊은 연관을 지니고 있을 것이다’라는 가설을 구체적으로 확인하려는 試論이란 점에서 학적 의의를 지닐 것이다.

This paper examined one of the oldest arguments in the field of Korean classical literature: "Hong-gil-dong-jeon is the first Korean vernacular novel, which was written by Heo Gyun." Three different perceptions presently exist on this argument. Some affirm this argument thoroughly, whereas others contradict it completely. The third way of thinking is rather eclectic; it is regarding Hong-gil-dong-jeon as the novel which was written by Heo Gyun but was transformed from the original. This paper assumed Hong-gil-dong-jeon by Heo Gyun as jeon, a Chinese narrative genre, based on the fact that the title of Hong-gil-dong-jeon is similar to the other jeon pieces by Heo Gyun such as Son-gok-san-in-jeon and Eom-Cheo-sa-jeon, and the fact that these works are all based on real people and their historical facts. In this respect, this paper compared the motifs of Hong-gil-dong-jeon to the historical facts of Hong Gil-dong, a real person, and made a conclusion that the Hong-gil-dong-jeon by Heo Gyun would have contained the motifs as follows: 1. the child of a concubine motif, 2, the family killing motif, 3. the extortion from a temple motif, 4. the extortion from a government office motif. 5. the utopia motif. The conclusion of this paper could provide a balanced point of view between the two extreme opinions: "The existing Hong-gil-dong-jeon is the same as the original text by Heo Gyun" and "The existing Hong-gil-dong-jeon was created by an unknown writer in the 19th century." The significance of this paper lies in the fact that it verified the assumption many scholars have supported: "The existing Hong-gil-dong-jeon underwent transformation from the original text by Heo Gyun, but it was still deeply rooted in that original text."
