Abstract
This study presents the contentment and immersion experience during maternal practice utilizing the flow theory. The subjects were 194 mothers residing in Mokpo, Incheon, Seoul and Gyeonggi who had children aged 10 years or less. We used an open-ended survey so that the subjects could describe their experiences unrestricted. The result of the study is summarized as follows. First, flow experience with maternal practice can be classified into three categories: mutual interaction between mother and child; mother's attention focused on the child; and mother's emotional control over her child. Second, flow experience is fostered by four particular positive emotional experiences: happiness, mutual connectedness, a sense of responsibility, respect and satisfaction. Flow experience positively influences maternal practice through five factors: it provides energy in the mother’s life defines the meanings of maternal experience faith in their children attempts to build relationships with their children and fostering importance of family. Third, we found seven factors that encourage the flow experience: education, concern from others, religion, family, circumstances, existence of child and the mother's effort. We also found three factors that hinder the flow experience: work, health, and financial situation.
