자격시험 정보지 『수험계』에 관한 일 고찰 : 조선인 합격자의 체험기 분석을 중심으로

Abstract

본 논문에서는 1920년부터 1944년까지 일본에서 발행되었던 잡지 『수험계』의 분석을 통해 식민지체제라는 공간 속에서 이루어지는 개인의 욕망 실현이 가지는 의미를 고찰한다. 이를 위해 ‘수험문총’, ‘모의논문’, ‘합격체험기’라는 지면에 투고되었던 조선인들의 글을 분석해, 조선인들이 시험이라는 장치를 어떻게 활용했는지, 그리고 『수험계』의 편집방침이 그들의 식민지체제 인식에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지를 분명히 한다. 더불어 해방 이후 그들의 삶에 경로에 관해 추적한다. 그 결과는 다음과 같이 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 식민지라는 상황 속에서 조선인들이 많이 도전했던 시험은 조선보통문관시험 및 조선변호사시험이었다. 물론 소수의 사례이지만 고등문관시험이나 전문학교검정시험에 도전했던 경우도 있었다. 이는 그들의 최종 학력과 무관하지 않았다. 둘째, 『수험계』의 투고자들 대부분은 경제적 혜택을 누리지 못한 자들로, 체험기는 독학과 고학의 양상을 분명히 드러내고 있었다. 즉, 이 잡지의 내용은 독자들에게 ‘성공신화’를 제공함으로써 사회적 성공이 개인의 노력에 달려있음을 강조하는 방식으로 구성되었다. 셋째, 자격시험에 합격한 사람들은 사회적・경제적 안정을 획득할 수 있었지만, 합격 이후 행보는 다양했다. 일제강점기라는 시대적 상황을 직시하면서 조선인으로서의 정체성을 지켜나간 사람도 있었지만, 1945년 이후에도 ‘단절’이나 ‘청산’의 과정 없이 일제강점기의 사회적 지위를 그대로 누렸던 사람도 있었다. 특히, 후자의 경우가 다수를 차지했다는 점은 역사적으로 확인된 바로, 현재까지도 ‘일제잔재의 청산’이 회자되는 이유가 되기도 한다.

This paper examines the meaning of realizing an individual's desire in the space of the colonial system through the analysis of the magazine Zyukenkai, published in Japan from 1920 to 1944. From the content analysis, it became clear that i) the exams that Koreans challenged a lot under the colonization were the Joseon General Examination and the Joseon Lawyer Examination, ii) the contributors to this magazine were those who did not receive economic benefits, and the experience clearly revealed aspects of self-studying and studying while working, and iii) those who passed the qualification exam were able to obtain social and economic stability, but their actions after passing the exams varied. Some tried to establish their identity as Koreans while facing the situation of the Japanese colonial era. On the other hand, some others benefited the social status of Japanese colonial era without a process of 'disconnection' or 'clean break' with the past even after 1945, which is one of the reasons why the liquidation of the Japanese colonial remnants is still discussed.
