사물의 이미지 차용에 관한 연구 : 본인의 칠예작품을 중심으로

Abstract

포스트모더니즘 이후 많은 작가는 사물의 이미지를 차용하여 작품에 표현하는 방법을 시도하고 있다. 작품에 표현된 사물의 이미지는 개인적인 취향을 반영하고 더 나아가서는 현대 사회의 단면을 드러내기도 한다. 또한 공장에서 대량 생산된 무미건조한 사물을 선택하는 행위를 통해 사물 그 자체가 가진본래의 기능과는 다른, 자기 자신만의 의미를 부여할 수 있다. 그것을 여기에서는 ‘사물(事物)의 사물화(私物化)’라고 부른다. 이 연구는 사물의 이미지를 차용한 작품을 제작하여 평범한 일상의 가치에대하여 재고하고, 주변에서 쉽게 볼 수 있는 물건이나 흔히 경험할 수 있는 사소한 일들이 칠예작품에어떻게 표현되는가에 관해 고찰함으로써 표현의 영역을 확장하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 사물의 이미지를 작품에 도입하기 위해 사용한 것은 차용 기법이다. 차용은 미술사나 광고, 미디어 등, 다른 문맥에서 기존의 이미지를 가져와 새로운 이미지와 조합하여 작품을 만드는 하나의 방법론이다. 본 논문에서는 사물의 이미지를 표현하기 위해 선택한 차용기법에 대해 논하고, 야기 카즈오(八木一夫), 필립 타프(Philip Taaffe)의 작품을 통해 미술작품에 표현된 차용에 대해 분석하였다. 연구자의 작품 제작에있어서 주로 사용한 매체는 옻칠이다. 옻칠은 주로 한국 및 일본, 중국에서 사용되어 온 천연재료로서고유의 색감과 표면 질감의 표현이 가능하다. 작품 형태 제작에 사용한 기법은 목심칠(木芯漆) 기법과금태칠(金胎漆) 기법, 협저탈태칠(夾紵脱胎漆) 기법이며 이외에도 옻칠 가루, 나전, 한지, 삼베 등을이용하여 장식하였다. 본 연구를 통해 ‘사물의 이미지’와 ‘사물을 통한 경험’이 작가에게 있어 중요한제작 동기가 됨을 알 수 있었으며, 앞으로 다양한 미술 분야에서 예술과 현실의 간극을 좁힐 수 있는매개체로서 사물을 차용한 작품 제작이 활발하게 이루어지기를 기대한다.

After postmodernism, many artists are trying to borrow images of objects and express them in their works. The images of objects expressed in an artwork reflect not only the artist’s personal taste but also an aspect of modern society. By choosing to use bland mass-produced objects, an artist can convey a meaning rather than the innate function of the object per se. This researcher calls this the ‘Transition from Visual Objects to Visual Art’. The purpose of this study is to expand the scope of artistic expressions by re-examining the value of ordinary daily life as an artist produces artworks appropriating images of objects and by examining how trivial objects or things commonly found in daily life can be expressed in Ottchil artworks. The method to introduce images of objects is appropriation. Appropriation is one of several methodologies that takes the existing image of objects from various contexts, such as art history, advertising, media, and combines them with new images to create an artwork. This study discusses the chosen methods of appropriation to express images of objects and analyzes how images were appropriated to create artworks by Kazuo Yagi and Philip Taaffe. The main medium used for this researcher’s artworks is ottchil, known as traditional Korea lacquer. Ottchil is a natural traditional material used not only in Korea but also in Japan and China, which offers unique colors and surface finishes. Ottchil artwork were made of wood, metal, and hemp. Artworks were also embellished using ottchil powder, mother-of-pearl, Korean paper, and hemp cloth. Through this study, this researcher was able to learn that the image of objects and the experience through objects can serve as an important inspiration for an artist to produce works of art and hopes to see more active productions of artworks appropriating images of objects as a medium that can help narrow the gap between art and reality.
