경판 20장본(송동본)을 중심으로 살펴본 방각본 <심청전>의 변모 양상

Abstract

<심청전>은 판소리계 소설이라고 분류되는 작품들 중에서도 그 발생과 전개 과정이 다른 작품들과 다른 측면이 있다. 문장체 소설과 판소리체 소설로 구분하기도 하고, 경판본 소설이 완판본 소설과 유사한 측면을 보이기도 하며, 판소리 창의 정착을 판소리계 소설이라고 하는 공식에서도 예외적인 현상을 노출한다. 이렇게 간단하지 않은 이본 구도를 야기한 원인은 경판 20장본(송동신간본)의 존재 때문이다. <심청전> 경판본은 현재 26장본, 24장본, 20장본 등이 전하고 있다. 그런데 26장본·24장본과 20장본은 매우 다른 내용을 담고 있는, 사실상 계열이 완전히 다른 이본이다. 경판본 소설의 발생과 전개 과정에서 이렇게 전혀 다른 계열이 존재하는 것은 매우 예외적인 현상으로 <춘향전>이나 <설인귀전>에서 비슷한 경우를 발견할 수 있을 뿐이다. <심청전>은 이미 경판본 단계에서 특별한 개작의 과정을 거쳤다는 것을 의미한다. 또한 경판 20장본이 송동시간본이라는 사실과 파곡 세책 <심청록>의 존재를 통해서, 그러한 특별한 개작이 단지 경판 20장본의 단계에서 발생한 것이 아니며 경판본이라는 형식에서만 발생한 것도 아니라는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 1913년 신문관에서 출판된 육전소설 <심청전>은 경판본을 중심으로 하는 서울 <심청전>들의 집합소가 된다. 최소한 3종의 이상의 경판본 또는 세책을 조합해서 완성된 것이 육전소설 <심청전>이다. <심청전> 완판본은 현재 41장본, 71장본 등이 전하고 있는데, 경판 20장본은 이들 완판본과도 관계를 맺는다. 경판 20장본은 내용상 다른 경판본들보다 완판본과 강한 친연성을 갖는다. 완판 71장본은 41장본을 확대부연해서 만들어진 이본이므로, 경판 20장본이 직접적으로 완판 41장본에 영향을 미쳤는지는 명확히 알 수 없지만, 일본인 하시모토가 1897년에 필사한 <심청전>은 두 이본을 매개해 주는 이본으로 평가할 수 있다. 결국 서울에서 완성된 경판 20본 류의 새로운 <심청전>은 1897년 이전에 전라도 지역에 파급되었고, 그러한 유통본들이 완판본으로 간행되어 41장본 및 71장본을 생성시켰던 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 완판 계통의 집대성은 <강상련>(1912)에서 이루어지는데, <강상련>은 기본적으로 완판 71장본을 대본으로 하면서도 다른 이본들과도 부분적인 유사성이 발견된다. <심청전>은 판소리와 관련이 있는 작품이고 또 다양한 이본을 가진 작품이다. 따라서 상업출판물인 방각본과 세책 텍스트를 중심으로 살펴본 이 논문의 구도를, 다양한 필사본들 특히 판소리 창본으로 분류되어 왔던 것들을 추가하여 어떻게 조화시켜 이해할 수 있을지에 대해서 다음의 과제로 삼는다.

Simcheong-jeon has a unique aspect of the generation and the process among the old novels related Pansori. Simcheong-jeon is divided into the literary novel affiliation and the Pansori-related novel affiliation. There is a similar contents with the woodblock print text in Seoul and Jeonju Simcheon-jeon. And It shows a exceptional circumstances in the formula that the lyrics of Pansori made Pasori-related novel. These complicated compositions are due to the existance of 20-leaf woodblock print text in Seoul. There are 26-leaf version, 24-leaf version, 20-leaf version in the woodblock print text in Seoul, and they are divided into 26-leaf & 24-leaf version and 20-leaf version when we look at the contents of the work. In fact they has completely different contents and sentences. This is very exceptional phenomenon in the generation and the process of the woodblock print text in Seoul; similar cases only are found in Chunhyang-jeon and Seolingyui-jeon. Simcheon-jeon underwent a special adaptation from the woodblock print phase in Seoul. Through the lending library text in Pagok, we can understand that such a special adaptation was not only used in the woodblock print text but also lending library text. In the 20th cencury, six-coin novel Simcheong-jeon made by Sinmungwan became a gathering text for these various Seoul version texts. There are 41-leaf version and 71-version in the woodblock print text in Jeonju. The 20-leaf Seoul version connect with these Jeonju versions, and the 20-leaf Seoul version is very more closer to the Jeonju version than another Seoul versions. 71-leaf Jeonju version is made by enlarging the 41-leaf-version, and it is unclear whether the 20-leaf Seoul version affected the 41-leaf Jeonju version, we can know the manuscript written by Hashimoto in 1897 connect the Seoul version and Jeonju version. In the result, new style Simcheong-jeon like the 20-leaf version made in Seoul was introduced to Jeollado prior to 1897. So we can understand that the manuscripts like Hashimoto text have made the 41-leaf and 71-leaf woodblock print text in Jeonju. These various Jeonju versions was compiled into Gangsangrteon in 1912. Gangsanryeon basically copied the 71-leaf version, but partial similarities with other versions are found. However Simcheong-jeon is the Pansori-related novel, so we need to study how this article’s conclusion is related with to the development and process of Pansori. That is the next task needs to be solved.
