대북 및 통일 정책 선호의 개인 성향과 가치 기반

Abstract

이 연구는 대북 및 통일 정책 선호와 이의 형성에 결정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 알려진 진보-보수 정치이념 성향의 심리적 기반을 파악하기 위해서 가치와 개인 성향이라는 동기 기반에 초점을 맞추어 대표성 있는 설문조사 자료를 이용하여 분석했다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 진보-보수 정치이념 성향의 동기적 기반으로 상정된 가치의 경우 선행연구 결과가 부분적으로 확인되었다. 슈워츠의 기본가치중 자기주도와 자극은 진보 정치이념 성향과 전통은 보수 성향과 예측대로 각각 관련이 있었으며, 탈물질주의도 예측대로 진보 성향과 관계가 있었다. 탈물질주의는 진보적 가치인 개방과 자기초월 가치와 정적 상관이 확인되었고, 온정적 성차별주의를 제외하고 대부분 보수적 이데올로기 성향과 부적 관계가 있는 것으로 나타나 슈워츠의 기본가치보다 진보 정치이념 성향의 동기적 기반으로 더 타당한 가치로 보인다. 둘째, 보수 정치이념 성향을 동기적으로 뒷받침하는 개인 이데올로기 성향은 사회문화적(우익권위주의), 경제적(사회지배지향), 현상유지 선호(체제정당화 동기), 젠더위계체제 정당화(양가적 성차별주의) 측면에서 측정할 수 있는 것으로 보인다. 이들 잠재적 개인차 변인들은 대체로 정적 상관이 있으며, 보수 이념성향 자기평가와도 관련이 있다. 또한, 이들 보수적 이데올로기 성향은 나이가 들수록 강화되는 것으로 보이며, 사회경제적 자원이 상대적으로 낮은 경우에 높은 경향도 확인되었다. 셋째, 진보 정치이념 성향은 가치와 이데올로기 성향과 사회경제변수 그리고 정당지지 변수를 통제한 다중회귀분석에서도 대체로 일관되게 대북강경 정책 선호를 낮추는 반면 대북유화 정책과 통일 선호를 높이는 독립적인 효과가 확인되었다. 한국의 경우 정치이념 성향이 대북 및 통일 정책 선호에 뚜렷하게 투영된다는 기존 연구결과를 재확인한 것이다. 마지막으로 이번 연구에서도 최근 일련의 연구에서 확인되고 있는 것처럼 나이가 많을수록 북한에 대한 강경정책을 반대하고 유화정책 선호가 높아지며 통일 또한 선호하는 것으로 드러났다. 또한, 여성은 남성보다 통일에 대한 선호가 낮은 것으로 나타났다.

This study attempts to identify the psychological foundation of progressive-conservative political orientation that has been found to shape political attitudes toward North Korea and reunification, focusing on its such motivational bases as values and ideological predispositions. It made the following observations based on a nationally representative survey data analysis: First, the analysis confirms that Schwartz’s basic values such as self-direction and stimulation are related to progressive political orientation while tradition to conservative orientation. It also finds that postmaterialism is negatively related to most conservative values except for benevolent sexism, which suggests that postmaterialism is a more valid motivation basis of political orientation than Schwartz’s basic values. Second, right-wing authoritarianism, social dominance orientation, system justification are found to be motivational bases for conservative political orientation. These individual difference variables are positively correlated to age while negatively to income and education. Third, a series of multiple regression analyses shows that progressive political orientation is found to increase preferences for reunification and conciliatory policy toward North Korea while to reduce hawkish policy preferences toward North Korea. Lastly, women are more likely to show negative attitudes about reunification while older generations are more likely to favor both appeasement policies toward North Korea and reunification, as recent studies have found.
