- Abstract
- This study examines Korean language learners’ performance and strategies when writing translated and direct essays. Forty subjects who have various language and cultural background—China, Japan, Mongol, Vietnam participated in this study. Participants answered strategy questionnaires created by Cohen & Brooks-Carson (2001) and wrote three different essays (an L1 essay, translated essay and direct essay). Linguistic data were measured by various methods (written discourse, error analysis, MLU-m and MLU-w, etc) Research findings are as follows. Participants build more complex structures when writing translated essays than direct essays. Participants show slightly higher numbers of MLU-m and MLU-w with translated essays than direct essays. There exists meaningful differences when utilizing certain writing strategies between advanced levels and non-advanced level learners.
