2000년대 소설에 나타난 광장의 장소성 연구

Abstract

이 논문은 2000년대에 발표된 한국 현대 소설을 대상으로 작품에 나타난 광장의 장소성을 밝히는 것을 목표로 한다. 이를 위해 김선우의 『캔들 플라워』와 최은영의 「미카엘라」, 그리고 김혜진의 「광장근처」, 황정은의 「아무것도 말할 필요가 없다」에 그려진 광장에서 인물의 장소경험이 이루어지고 정체성이 형성되는 양상을 살펴보았다. 『캔들 플라워』는 캐나다에서 온 소녀 지오가 한국에서 만난 십대 친구들과 2008년미국산 쇠고기 수입반대 촛불집회에 참여하여 민주적인 공론장에서 정치적인 주체로 형성되는 과정과 닭장차와 컨테이너 장벽 같은 공권력의 장소가 평화와 유머로써 전유되는 모습을 보여준다. 나아가 광장에 자신이 기르던 소를 끌고 나타난 뉴타운 재개발 지역의 철거민 숙자씨의 죽음은 지오 등에게 환경과 “생명에 대한 예의”를 생각하는 대안적인 장소만들기를 실천하게 만든다. 「미카엘라」는 광화문 광장에서 벌어지는 진상규명 촉구와피로도 담론, 기억의 정치와 망각의 정치라는 장소를 둘러싼 경합을 통해, 세월호 기억이장소화 되는 양상을 보여준다. 「광장근처」는 광장에서 DVD를 판매하면서 살아가는 청년이 해고노동자들과도 교황의 방문으로 열광하는 사람들과도 연대하지 못하고 철저히 공적 공간에서 소외되는 양상을 보인다. 「아무것도 말할 필요가 없다」 또한 2016년 박근혜 대통령 퇴진 촛불집회에서 경험한 여성혐오와 젠더차별의 양상을 통해 과연 “혁명은완성된 것일까”라고 묻는다. 요컨대 2000년대에 발표된 한국 현대 소설에 그려진 광장의장소성은 자유로운 개방성과 민주적 소통의 장소로서 인물들을 정치적인 주체로 구성한다. 그러나 공적 장소인 광장에서 조차 배제되는 장소 없는 인물들을 통해 과연 광장이 민주주의의 열망을 온전히 실현시키면서 공공성과 인권을 실천하고 있는지 문제를 제기하면서장소에 대한 감수성을 촉구한다.

This study aims to examine the placeness of agora shown in Korean modern novels published in the 2000s. For this, this study examined the aspect of having personal experiences of place and forming identity at agora shown in 『Candle Flower』 by Kim, Seon-Woo, 「Michaela」 by Choi, Eun-Young, 「Near the Square」 by Kim, Hye-Jin and 「No Need to Say Anything」 by Hwang, Jeong-Eun. In the 『Candle Flower』, a girl named Jio from Canada is grown into a political subject in a democratic public sphere by participating in the candlelight rally against the importing of U.S. beef together with her Korean teenage friends in 2008, and the places of governmental authority such as police bus and container wall are appropriated as peace and humor. Moreover, the death of Sook-Ja who appears with her own cow in the agora after being evicted from a new town redevelopment area, inspires Jio and many others to practise ‘Making an Alternative Place’ thinking about environment and “courtesy towards life”. The 「Michaela」 shows that the memory of Sewol ferry is place-made through the competition around a place for the encouragement of truth ascertainment, discourse of fatigue, politics of memory, and politics of oblivion happening in the Gwanghwamun Square. In the 「Near the Square」, a young man who sells DVDs is completely alienated in a public space without banding together with fired workers or people who are excited about the Pope’s visit. The 「No Need to Say Anything」 also asks “Has the revolution been completed?” through the aspect of misogyny and gender discrimination experienced in the candlelight rally for the impeachment of the President Park, Geun-Hye in 2016. In summary, as a place for free openness and democratic communication, a sense of place of agora described in Korean modern novels published in the 2000s, composes the characters as apolitical subject. However, through the characters without a place who are excluded even from agora as a public space, they urge the sensitivity to place by raising a question about if the agora is practising the publicness and human rights by fully realizing the passion for democracy.
