조선 초기 조선국왕 책봉의례의 정비와 그 특징

Abstract

조선국왕 책봉의례는 조선의 국왕이 명 황제로부터 誥命을 받는 의식이었다. 이는 대외적으로 權署國事였던 조선의 국왕이 그 위상과 명분을 온전히 갖춘 ‘朝鮮國王’으로 거듭나는 순간이었을 뿐만 아니라, 조선 내부적으로는 새로 즉위한 국왕이 문무백관 앞에서 왕위계승의 정통성을 확인시키는 의례이기도 하였다. 따라서 조선에서는 국왕의 책봉의례를 예제적으로 완벽히 거행하기 위해 적극적인 정비과정을 거치며 완성해나갔다. 조선 초 조선국왕 책봉의례의 정비과정에서 나타난 특징은 세 가지로 정리된다. 첫째, 조선국왕 책봉의례는 詔書를 영접하는 의례 절차를 바탕으로 거행되었다. 설령 조서가 내려지지 않았더라도, 조선에서는 황제가 내리는 가장 높은 등급의 문서인 조서에 준하여 책봉고명을 맞이하였다. 둘째, 책봉의례에서 국왕은 禮服과 거리가 먼 차림을 하였다가, 자신을 조선국왕으로 삼는다는 황제의 명을 받은 뒤에 大禮服인 冕服으로 갈아입었다. 이러한 국왕의 복식 변화는 책봉의례를 거치며 그 대외적 위상이 확립되었음을 나타낸다. 셋째, 조선국왕 책봉의례에는 각 의례가 거행되었던 당시의 특수한 상황이 반영되었다. 이는 기존의 정해진 의주만으로는 다양한 변수를 수렴하지 못하는 상황에서, 매번 새로운 의례 절차를 상정해낸 조선 초 예제 정비의 유연함을 보여준다.

The ceremony officially held to appoint Joseon king(冊封儀禮) in early Joseon dynasty has three characteristics. First, this is the ceremony took place through the process of receiving edict(詔書). Even if there was no edict issued by the Ming dynasty, the ceremony still had been carried out based on Receiving Edict ceremony(迎詔儀禮) which corresponds to the highest position. Second, the king wore casual attire, far from formal attire in the ceremony of officially appointing Joseon king. Later, he changed his clothes to ‘myeonbok’ after he was being officially appointed from the Ming emperor that he will be the king of the Joseon dynasty. This event shows that not formally appointed king who were unable to wear formal attire have become a Joseon king wearing clothes of the highest level. Third, the ceremony of officially appointing Joseon king has reflected each individually special situations of the time when the ceremony was held. Due to fixed manual, it was very hard to accommodate various variables. For this reasons, new procedures were prepared, thus paving the way for more organized and enhanced institution.
