- Abstract
- This paper looks at the aspect of cognitive meaning of idiomatic expressions including Korean color words: black, white, red, blue, and yellow. It investigates how frequently such idiomatic expressions are used in a positive sense or negative sense. It also finds that is associated with images that each color word's symbolic meaning is reflected, and shows the Korean sentiment for/against each color word and the influence of the Korean sentiment on the formation of idiomatic expressions. When these color words express a phenomenon as it is, and even they express it symbolically or figuratively, it finds which cognitive meaning they have. It also shows how these cognitive meanings were formed in people's head. In chapter 2, it watches the process of creating meaning derived from the basic meaning of words based on the dictionary definition. Chapter 3 classifies the types of color words expressions according to various criteria. In chapter 4, it classifies the types of idiomatic expressions frequently used by each color according to analysis of diachronic data, investigation of the frequency of use, and information retrieval from corpus. In chapter 5, it reveals the characteristics of cognitive meaning of idiomatic expressions using Korean color words and grasps the Korean sentiment and consciousness of color about them.(Sookmyung Women's University)
