- Abstract
- The merchandise economy development in the Song and Ming dynasties in China, not only promoted the appearance of the life style of the townsfolk society, but also formed the various new values of the townsfolk society. In the past years, however, the historians have researched little on the values of the townsfolk society in this time. But the “Text” novel, which took the life of the townsfolk as its writing background, have fully showed the connotation and essence of the values of the townsfolk society through a large amount of the stories and the authors’ comments. In general, the values of the Chinese ancient townsfolk society includes the concept of money and material gaining, the concept of comeuppance, the concept of affection marriage and the concept of good and bad as well as right and wrong. At the same time, these various values were exhibited by the related story themes in the “Text” novel.
