- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to test the mediating effect of self-identity on the association between parent-adolescent communication and career decision-making. For this purpose, attempts were made to investigate parent-adolescent communication, self-identity, and career decision-making. The mediating effects of self-identity on the association between parent-adolescent communication and career decision-making were examined. A total of 678 questionnaires were finally analyzed. For data analysis, an SPSS 22.0 program was used to estimate frequency, percentage, the mean and standard deviation, and Cronbach's α, Scheffe’s test, multiple linear regression analysis, and the Sobel test were all performed. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: Self-identity partially mediated between father-child open communication and rational career decision-making and partially mediated between father-child problem-based communication and dependent career decision-making. These results support the need for adolescents to make open communication with parents, and develop self-identity with the aim of improving rational career decision-making. On the basis of these results, it is necessary to offer counseling and education to both adolescents and parents with the objective of helping adolescents to make good parent-child communication, establish self-identity, and to make rational career decisions.
