김석범의 [火山島]에 나타난 ‘친일’ 비판의 의미

Abstract

2015년 10월 한국어로 완역된 대하소설 『화산도』 12권을 관통하는 핵심주제 중의 하나는 ‘친일’, ‘대일협력’에 대한 면밀하고 단호한 문제제기이다. 이 작품 내내 친일이 제대로 청산되지 않은 해방직후의 사회적 현실이 한반도의 현대사에 미친 영향이 비판적으로 탐구되고 있다. 『화산도』의 작가 김석범은 오랜 작가생활 동안 늘 친일청산 문제에 관심을 지녀왔다. 그는 『전향과 친일파(転向と親日派)』(岩波書店, 1993)라는 저작을 발간할 정도로 이 문제에 대해 깊은 식견과 지식을 가지고 있는바, 이러한 문제의식이 『화산도』 곳곳에 깊이 투영되어 있다. 작가 김석범에게 친일과 해방직후의 굴절된 역사에 대한 성찰과 비판은 『화산도』를 쓰게 만든 근본적인 동인이었던 것으로 보인다. 『화산도』의 주인공 이방근은 식산은행 이사장인 친일파 아버지 이태수의 존재로 인해 오히려 친일로부터 한 발 떨어져 반일활동에 참여할 수 있었다. 아버지의 사회적 지위와 후광이 그로 하여금 친일로부터 거리를 둘 수 있는 방패막이가 되어주었던 것이다. 이방근은 친일문제를 단지 도덕적인 차원에서 바라보지 않고 각 개인이 처한 다양한 상황과 맥락을 섬세하게 참조한다. 그는 자신이 어떤 직업도 없이 반일 사상을 견지할 수 있었던 점이 아버지 이태수의 경제력과 사회적 후광에 힘입고 있다는 사실을 명료하게 자각하고 있다. 친일문인과 친일문학에 대한 비판은 『화산도』 전편을 관통하는 주제이다. 이광수, 최남선, 최재서, 백철, 『국민문학』 등에 대한 엄정한 비판이 작품 속에 수시로 등장한다. 재일 디아스포라 작가인 김석범에 의해 친일문학에 대한 과감하고 근본적인 비판이 전개되었다는 사실은 한국문학의 현황과 결여에 대한 자각으로 이끈다. 식민지시대에 ‘협화회’를 통해 친일에 적극적으로 가담하다가 해방직후에는 사회주의 투사로 변신한 유달현이라는 인물에 대한 비판적 형상화를 통해 『화산도』는 식민지 시대의 친일파가 해방 이후에 반공을 앞세우며 여전히 권력을 유지하는 현실에 대한 통렬한 비판을 반복해서 전개한다. 한마디로 말해서 『화산도』에는 지금까지 어떤 한국문학 작품도 충분히, 제대로 포착하지 못한 친일문제의 역사적 뿌리에 대한 치밀하고 과감한 진단이 수행되고 있다.

The theme of the epic novel, “Volcanic Island”(『火山島』), which was made into a complete translation in Korean in October 2015, is a decisive criticism on ‘pro-Japanese activities’. Kim Seok-bum(金石範), a writer of “Volcanic Island” has a great interest in clearing the pro-Japanese groups. He also published a book titled “Conversion and Pro-Japanese collaborators”(Iwanami Shoten:岩波書店, 1993). This critical mind is deeply projected in various places in “Volcanic Island”. To the writer Kim Seok-bum, a reflection on the pro-Japanese problem was a fundamental motivation for writing “Volcanic Island”. Lee Bang-geun, the main character of “Volcanic Island” is contrasted with his father who is the pro-Japanese collaborator father and also the president of the Siksan Bank(殖産銀行). Because of his father’s being, Lee participates in anti-Japanese activities, one step away from pro-Japanese groups. He does not look at the pro-Japanese issue from a moral point of view. Lee delicately refers to the various situations and contexts in which they are held. The criticism on pro-Japanese writers and pro-Japanese literature is a topic that penetrates “Volcanic Island”. Impartial criticism on Lee Kwang-su, Choi Nam-sun, Choi Jae-seo, Baek Chul, and a magazine “National Literature”(『國民文學』) appears in the work from frequently. The bold and fundamental criticism on pro-Japanese literature leads to the awareness of the lack of modern Korean literature. In “Volcanic Island”, criticism on the fact that pro-Japanese collaborators of the colonial era still maintain their power after liberation is repeatedly described. In “Volcanic Island”, a bold diagnosis is being carried out on the pro-Japanese issue, which has not been properly captured by any Korean literature.
