Abstract
During Joseon Dynasty, discussion on ‘novel’ was very activated and there were literati in the center thereof. Amount and content of the preface of publication or miscellaneous records of literati during Joseon Dynasty are very diversified. Preface used to have been written upon somebody’s request or published along with one’s own compilation, while miscellaneous records had more various forms from a few short writing to book report, etc. Meanwhile as the researcher has conducted this research, discussion of the novel discussed in the annals has been mainly made of opposite opinion besides extreme dispute as like or not. Compared to that, the researcher could determine that the preface and miscellaneous more variously included literati’s honest opinion about novels of that period, as the researcher continued this research. Besides, some points were determined that the opinion about the novel discussed in the preface, the view of novel reported by their own miscellaneous records or others’ records appeared different. The basis is still subtle, however the researcher considers that there would be more historical material as this, if this research is continued to late Joseon. Particularly, this research determined that positive criticism of novel stood out more in the preface of published book during Joseon Dynasty or literati’s miscellaneous records than the criticism of the annals. Meanwhile lots of scholars have insisted that literati, scholars, or neo-Confucianists officially opposed novels, however there are opinions that they actually enjoyed reading novels. The basis of this seems to be the preface and miscellaneous records. Therefore, if this research strongly proceeded negative view on Joseon novel through annals criticism, this research also investigated mainly the discussion on positive opinion of the literati and scholars about novels of that period through the records of preface or miscellaneous records. Before any sharp discussion on fiction of novel had been proceeded during the 17th century, above all, there are sentences regarding novels as ‘interesting’, ‘instructive’, ‘good for time killing’, ‘enlarges experience and knowledge’, etc., this research intensively investigated this part. This research firstly investigated criticism of Chinese novels among the sentences of preface and miscellaneous records from early Joseon to mid Joseon, and investigated any difference from the content of the annals. Henceforth, the researcher considers that this research could be a basis to research the ancient chinese novels criticism discussion on late Joseon.
