Abstract
Recently, our society has seen a sharp rise in foundation of new choruses and their activities with their founder and members increasingly more diversified than ever. At the same time, the role of chorus dance in chorus performance is increasingly expanding and stronger demand for chorus dance accordingly, which eventually leads to lack of professional chorus dance instructors. Despite these social calls for chorus dance in association with reinvigorated chorus boom, Korea suffers near absence of proper, full-fledged introduction, information material, and guideline due to lack of systematic approach toward it. Against this backdrop, I would like to introduce a part of choreography and instruction guidance of chorus dance based on my experience for the past 20 years. Chorus dance is one of the iconic genres that represent the convergence type culture and art and its proper understanding requires multidisciplinary knowledge covering music, stage arts and performance production and experiential field competencies. With this in mind, my paper is comprised of the followings. Ⅰ. Introduction, Ⅱ. Meaning and Role of Chorus Dance Ⅲ. Understanding of Chorus, Ⅳ. Understanding of Performance Environment Ⅴ. Effective Chorus Dance Choreography and Teaching Method Ⅵ. Conclusion I hope this study would be of any help for chorus instructors (conductor, teacher etc.) who have not professionally majored in dance to provide relevant students with education of chorus dance in an effective manner and also help junior students who major in dance in college enter the world of chorus dance as well. In addition, I hope chorus members will be able to better enjoy chorus activities while learning and experiencing synaesthetic expressions of chorus, which will be beneficial, convergence-oriented, experiential study that promotes mutual understanding and communications while enhancing the quality of life for individuals. I expect that chorus (sing-along and dance) as an integrative art that makes our society more beautiful will be more rejuvenated and disseminated nationwide.
