Historical Manuscripts in The National Library of Korea

초록

The aim of this article is to outline the history and importance of the collection of Korean historical manuscripts in the National Library of Korea. The National Library of Korea holds 16,121 historical manuscripts which are acquired from Japanese colonial period until now. These manuscripts include Land contract,Certificate of appointment, Family register and Correspondence. These are collected by donation and purchase. Initially the manuscripts have been catalogued briefly in card format. In 1972, the library published Descriptive Catalogue of Korean historical manuscripts which includes 13,447 items. The book consists of title, addressees, addressers, place, year and summary. With the beginning of annotation project of Korean historical manuscripts since 2003,more detailed cataloging work was done. Korean Machine Readable Cataloging format (KORMARC) was applied to Korean historical manuscripts. The Library has built a manuscript database of valuable resources to enable users to search them through the Internet. But this database was applied to the rare book cataloging rule. Thus standardization tools of Korean historical manuscripts should be developed to achieve standardization of bibliographical information for the common sharing and wider distribution of information.
