초록
This study sought to examine types of pictures used in Korean and global elementary school English textbooks and Korean young learners’ perceptions of them. For this study, all of the pictures and illustrations that were used in three Korean and three global elementary school English textbooks were analysed. In addition, a survey was conducted with 200 mixed-ability sixth grade students from three different elementary schools in Seoul, Korea. The textbook pictures were analyzed using the criteria of picture type, drawing techniques, and functionality of the pictures(illustrative, stimulus-response, or student-generated). The results showed that drawings and illustrative pictures were the most common type of picture used in the six textbooks, primarily for decorative purposes and which was different from what the students liked to have from the textbook. Thus the researcher suggests that publishers and teachers investigate learners’ perceptions about pictures in the textbooks and conduct a study with regard to the use of pictures and picture-related activities that reflect a communicative language approach in textbooks.
