The purpose of this study was to develop and validate music intervention self-assessment scale for music therapy students. This study includes in-depth interviews conducted with eight professional music therapists and six music therapy students after extensive literature review on music interventions implemented by music therapists. Eighty nine initial items were derived from literature review and interviews. Then, four factors and 60 items were selected for the preliminary survey based on the content validity examined by a panel, cognitive validity examined by music therapy students, and a review from a Korean linguistic scholar. The preliminary survey data were collected from 162 music therapy students. Four factors and 22 items were determined by data item analysis and exploratory factor analysis. For the main survey conducted on 197 music therapy students, data item analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis were performed to finalize the scale. As a result, four factors and 18 items were identified with construct validity: a) musical ability; b) musical awareness; c) application of music intervention; and d) music intervention anxiety. The concurrent validity and predictive validity were assessed, comparing the items with those of Novice Counselors’ Counseling Ability Self-evaluation Scales and Music Therapist Self-Efficacy Scales. This study provided a self-reflection tool and information on music intervention for music therapy students, and reflect the unique characteristics of music therapy.
