초록

The purpose of this research is to propose an implementation plan for expanding the Korean Wave (Hallyu) into the fashion domain. Originally rooted in TV show and film, the Korean Wave is now seeking something beyond music by branching out into the various areas such as food, fashion and game. The government strives to facilitate the Korean Wave by proposing a‘Han-Style Implementation Plan’ for a systematic support. One of the plan’s policy objectives includes the globalization of ‘Hanbok’, the Korean traditional garment. Establishing ‘Hanbok Advancement Center’ is one of the many examples of government’s implementation in this policy. Although the perception of Hanbok accepting as a genre of fashion have changed drastically due to these government efforts, there are sill many hurdles ahead. The current research considers Hanbok as an embodiment of traditional costume beauty. Upon this understanding, this research provides a review of foreign cases regarding globalization of traditional costume beauty. Also the current research proposes how traditional Korean costume beauty can be globalized with suggestions of specific policy approaches to be implemented for this agenda. In sum, existing government’s policy initiatives which have been implemented separately should be integrated organically under the overarching theme of supporting K-Fashion Wave. Also the globalization of ‘Hanbok’ should be considered in extensive way as a globalization of Korean fashion design based on traditional costume beauty. In order to facilitate this, more opportunities should be created for domestic and foreign designers to encourage creative attempts in private sector. In addition, cooperation with various other industrial area is necessary to create synergistic effects for globalization of Korean fashion design.
