Interpersonal feedback in group counseling is a core process that facilitates interpersonal learning and corrective relational experiences within the group. This study aimed to explore the essence of interpersonal feedback experiences by understanding and elucidating the meanings of such experiences among group counseling participants. In-depth interviews were conducted with eight individuals who participated in unstructured interpersonal group counseling sessions. Data were analyzed using Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological methodology. From a total of 263 meaning units, six core constituents and 25 sub-constituents were derived. The six core constituents of interpersonal feedback experience identified were: (1) Discomfort from others’ criticism, (2) Facing uncomfortable truths, (3) A period of reflective appraisal, (4) The beginning of genuine understanding, (5) A crossroad of choice, and (6) A step toward change. The essence of the group feedback experience can be described as “a process of confronting oneself between embarrassment and relief, and taking a step toward change through a period of reflective appraisal.” This study offers an in-depth understanding of the meaning of interpersonal feedback experiences and provides implications for the effective use of feedback in group counseling contexts.
