This study explores the historical trajectory and status of Korean Studies and its libraries in North America, focusing on Columbia University, the first institution in the region to offer Korean language courses and open the ‘Korean Library’ in the 1930s. It examines the founding and activities of The Korean Culture Society, an organization of Korean students in America that played a pivotal role in the library’s establishment and operation. Furthermore, it investigates contemporary domestic media campaigns in Korea aimed at donating books to the library at Columbia. By analyzing these early cultural diplomacy efforts, this paper illuminates how such initiatives evolved into the foundational Korean Studies collections that support academic research in North America today.
