초록

It is the implicit duty of all book reviewers to ensure that the message thrown by the author is not trapped in the library. The summary of the book review on Soo-Bok Cheong's Intellectual History of Korean Sociology tetralogy, which started from this premise, is as follows. First, Cheong described the history of Korean sociology in the way of intellectual history, which could be explained through interest in intellectuals and social participation from youth throughout his life. In this regard, the Intellectual History of Korean Sociology tetralogy is a work that critically analyzes how theoretically and practically Korean sociologists have intervened in the development of their society, and urges them to reflect on the role and duty of sociologists as intellectuals. Second, As a historical response to Korean sociology, this tetralogy attempted a systematic and publicized description of the history of sociology to overcome the limitations of fragility of existing Korean sociology descriptions. As a history, Intellectual History also faces the problem of securing objectivity, and Cheong solved this problem through the form and method characteristics of writing. For 20 years after his second stay in France and his second return, Cheong not only attempted to observe participation by reading the research results of Korean social studies, but also tried to objectify participation through sociological self-analysis based on Bourdieu’s. Therefore, this Intellectual History of Korean Sociology tetralogy attempted to objectify participation in the entire Korean sociological community, and it was evaluated as a work that urged reflection on the role and duties of Korean sociologists as intellectuals by critically analyzing how theoretically and practically intervened in the development of their society.
