The purpose of this research was to examine the differences in physical activity competencies between the elective physical activities chosen by children and the physical activities planned by teachers. The participants of this study were 49 children of two five-year-olds classes from K kindergarten in Gyeonggi-do. The experimental group was led by children to freely select play materials and perform physical activities, and the control group applied the physical activity program planned by the teacher. In this study, in order to examine the differences in physical activity competencies of the two groups, basic movement skills, physical activity attitudes, and physical activity levels were measured and analyzed using the spss program. The research results were as follows. First, it was found that the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group in jumping, static balance, throwing and kicking among the basic movement techniques. Second, among physical activity attitudes, the experimental group showed significantly higher preference and enjoyment than the control group. Third, the amount of physical activity in the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group. This study is meaningful in that it suggests a new direction for the free play-centered teaching method led by young children and verifies its effectiveness in physical activity capacity.
