This study is a narrative research that examines how parents care for their children in the current era through the stories of their experiences of caring. The expansion of public child care and growing number of fathers who participate in child care show that the aspects of ’caring’ is changing nowadays. Nevertheless, there is a lack of research that reveals what parental experiences when caring for their children. This study conducted a narrative research on the caring experience of eight parents who participated in early childhood education institutions which could be an exemplary group representing the social aspects of child care. As a result, the following three types of child care experiences of parents who participate in their child’s educational institution appeared; ‘giraffe child care’, in which both household chores and child care were concentrated on mothers, ‘lion child care’, in which fathers participated in only some part of child care such as playing with or teaching their child, and ‘penguin child care’, in which mothers and fathers coordinated their opinion and agreed together. This suggests that ‘child care’ is not simply a division of gender role between a mother and a father, but also still a changing discourse. It is hoped that this study would help searching for the meaning of ‘child care’ in the present era and the direction of change.
