his study examined how negative emotional temperament of 3-year-old children affects maternal parenting stress and whether father involvement moderates this relationship. Data from 1,687 mothers and children from the Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC) were analyzed using hierarchical regression analysis with SPSS 31.0 and PROCESS Macro v4.3. Children’s negative emotionality (EAS scale), maternal parenting stress (Korean Parenting Stress Index), and father involvement in parenting were measured, controlling for maternal education, household income, child’s gender, and birth order. Results showed that children’s negative emotionality positively predicted maternal parenting stress, while father involvement negatively correlated with stress. Importantly, father involvement significantly moderated the relationship between children’s negative emotionality and maternal stress. Simple slope analysis revealed that higher father involvement strengthened rather than buffered the positive effect of children’s negative emotionality on parenting stress. These unexpected findings suggest that father involvement’s impact depends on the quality of involvement and coparenting consistency. The study emphasizes developing tailored parent education programs considering children’s temperamental characteristics and family support policies promoting cooperative coparenting.
