초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the operational efficiency of penny and quarter slots at casinos in downtown Las Vegas and to examine whether the slot machines are operating at their optimal level using a quadratic model. Based on the quadratic models developed in this study, the optimal hold rate was 8.74% for penny slots and 6.75% for quarter slots. The findings of this study showed that both penny and quarter slots have not been performing at their optimal levels. For penny slots, the actual hold was substantially higher than the optimal hold while for quarter slots, the actual hold was below the optimal level. This study suggests downtown Las Vegas casino operators to lower the hold rate for penny slots and at the same time consider increasing the hold for quarter slots in order to maximize the gaming revenues.
