초록
The purpose of this paper is to criticize a racism and a structure of patriarchal oppression through the double other and self-hatred in Nella Larsen's Passing. The research method explains the psychological structure of the two black women as a psychological process of self-hate and interprets the meaning through the text analysis. The main contents of the study explain ‘passing’, the main theme of the work, and analyze self-hatred emotions caused by racism and social others. Self-hatred manifests psychologically as symptoms such as narcissism, guilt, shame, and depression, all of which result from long-term discriminatory exclusion and oppressive treatment. The results of the study show that the character’ obsessive self-hatred is death, which itself is the result of the denial of an identity that does not belong fully to either white or black society. Finally, this study criticizes the reality of racism that still exists by showing the tragic story of two women who try to overcome their social marginalization by passing as white.
