The Double Mediating Effects of Self Encouragement and Self Discouragement on the Relationships between Fear of Negative Evaluation and Depressive Symptoms of University Students

The purpose of this study was to examine the double mediating effects of encouragement and discouragement on the relationships between fear of negative evaluation and depressive symptom of university student. 400 undergraduate students completed K-BFNE2, Self Encouragement Scale, Self Discouragement Scale, and CES-D. Collected data were analyzed by SPSS 25.0 and Hayes’s Process Macro ver. 3.5. The major results of this study were as follows. fear of negative evaluation perceived by university students had direct effects on the depressive symptoms while it also indirectly had significant effects on the depressive symptoms by passing through the encouragement and discouragement. Furthermore, verified significant differences in the strength of the indirect effects were found. In future studies, the need to study not only psychological factors but also family factors, social and environmental factors in an integrated consideration is raised.
