Revisiting the Cryptic Phrases in Dong-dong

초록

This article interpreted the three cryptic phrases in Dong-dong and discussed the literary meanings embedded in those phrases. Firstly, 'bun-di-nam-ga-ro ga-ggon jyeo' was investigated. This phrase has been interpreted as the chopsticks made with the bun-di tree, but it should be translated as the tray made with the bun-di tree considering the seasonal customs, which had been recorded in Chinese archives. The meaning of 'meu-leu-sab-no-i-da' was also reinvestigated. This phrase has been generally understood as 'bite', but the criticism on this interpretation was high. This article agreed with that criticism and argued that the phrase meant 'take away'. The newly interpreted phrases in this article shed light on the literary characteristics of Dong-dong. Choban, or the tray made with the bun-di tree, is related to the shamanism, which is the threshold of understanding the literary characteristics of Dong-dong. The records of Dong-dong in Koryo-sa described Dong-dong had imitated shamanic phrases and had the characteristics of the hymn. In addition, choban is also related to the literary structure of Dong-dong. Choban, which was customarily used the day before New Year's day, implies that Dong-dong was constructed with circular time structure. This suggests Dong-dong is related to the other wollyong-che-ga, or Korean vernacular poems with circular time structure.
