어셈블리지 관점에서 본 현대 화예 설치 작품 연구 －<METALLIC BLOOM>을 중심으로－

This study establishes criteria for assessing plant materials’ structural and spatial contributions in mixed-media floral installations. A review of art-historical and relational assemblage discourses yielded four categories: heterogeneity and relationality; preservation and recontextualization of material and contextual properties; form-generating roles; and spatio-temporal composition. Comparing Nam June Paik’s TV Garden, El Anatsui’s Behind the Red Moon, and Azuma Makoto’s Shiki I × Landscapes refined these into five dimensions: mutual constitution, mutual recontextualization, expansion of floral form, spatial expansiveness, and non-substitutability. Mutual constitution denotes how plant and non-plant materials shape or alter one another’s formal and spatial functions. Applying the criteria to METALLIC BLOOM involved comparing plans, records, photographs, installation views, and measurements, together with virtual removal and substitution analysis, assessment. Deadwood, branches, and roots formed vertical and diagonal structures and irregular contours. Flowers, potted plants, and foliage connected metal and electronic modules, organizing direction, rhythm, and spatial distribution; some flowers added only local rhythm and color contrast. E-waste retained use traces in grids and hanging modules; mirrors and lighting extended visual range through reflections and shadows. Removing key plant materials would weaken the framework and organic continuity. Synthetic substitutes could retain form and color but not growth traces, surface differences, or temporal potential. Removing or homogenizing industrial and electronic objects would weaken grids, reflections, use traces, and contexts of production, distribution, and consumption. As a researcher-conceived single case, the criteria require further testing. The study thus distinguishes decorative use from compositional roles based on plant materials’ actual structural and spatial contributions rather than quantity or visual prominence.
