기계와 이미지 - 하이테크놀로지에 대한 매체 인식론적 고찰

Generally Speaking, ‘lineality’ and ‘repetition’ count as the commonest characters of ‘machine’. But These characters are as good as those related with the modern world view. When most media theorists call the old media ‘machine media’, they presuppose that machine is similar with letter owing to their common lineality. Although this kind of concept ‘machine’ corresponds exactly with the modern technology, it is not adequate for covering so－called high－technology. Borrowing Deleuze’s terms, it can be said that the modern meaning of machine is not so much ‘machinique’ as ‘mécanique’. In Deleuze’s concept of machine can we find out a new concept of machine different from the modern meaning. Deleuze’s concept of machine which succeeds some of Lacan’s is distinguished strikingly from the modern concept of machine which regards machine as a perfectly pre－designed and self－completed structure. According to Deleuze, machine is not a complete structure. It is an ever－changing and self－transforming(becoming other) system. Machine contains a possibility to transform into other (become other) by changing the dispositions of its parts. Moreover, Deleuze’s repetition is not the repetition of the same (one) but it is repetition producing differences. Deleuze’s concept of machine does not match with the modern technology. But it is correspondent with the contemporary high－technology represented by robot technology or nano－technology. And by using machine contemporary media arts express the limit of the modern meaning of machine in the artistic form. Following the tradition of the avant－guard arts, they exclude the letters (including the images of traditional paintings representing the world), and reflect the consideration that image can be ever－transformed. In this reflection is contained the reconsideration of the machine. Therefore media arts have a character of a discourse on the high－technology.
