This study aims to highlight the utility and the implication of the republicanism perspective in understanding the characteristics exposed in 10 days of resistance movement in Gwangju which started at May 18 in 1980, and interpreting the historical significance of them. For doing so, this study is to define the republicanism perspective in the dimension of political thoughts by examining the previous studies. Based on that definition, this study tries to explain and interpret the historical significance of the characteristics focusing on the arbitrary domination of the elites, the rise of the university student class as a balancer, and the republican regime that emerged in 5 · 18 Resistance Movements.
