초록

The purpose of this study is to illustrate the nature and characteristics of memory appeared in pre-1949 Chinese Poetry, especially focusing on four major Chinese poets’ creative works such as Wen Yiduo's 聞一多(1899-1946) "Memory" 記憶, Dai Wangshu's 戴望舒(1905-1950) "My Memory" 我的記憶, Lin Huiyin's 林徽因 "Memory" 記憶, and Mu Dan's 穆旦 "Remembrance" 憶. Basically, their poems exhibit the notion of 'the collective memory' which was theorized by Maurice Halbwachs(1877-1945). The study theorizes that the collective memory is shared, passed on and also constructed by the group, or modern society. This debate was taken up by Jan Assmann's 'the cultural memory', which fulfills a storage function. This study contains four parts, together with introduction and conclusion. Part One explores the qualities of memory in Wen Yiduo's poem through his deep frustration of living on foreign land. Part Two examines Dai Wangshu’s poem through his striving effort to discover new poetic form as well as content in the context of the collective/cultural memory. Part Three analyzes the characteristics of Lin Huiyin's poem through her love memories with Xu Zhimo 徐志摩(1897-1931). Part Four examines in more detail Mu Dan's poem through the connection between his deep sense of despair for a life and his Christian religious mindedness.
