The Effects of Child Abuse and Neglect on the Sense of Community among Adolescents: The Double-mediation Effects of Depression and Peer Attachment

The purpose of this study is to examine the double-mediation effects of depression and peer attachment in relation to child abuse and neglect and the sense of community among adolescents. For this purpose, we analyzed the data of 1,910 adolescents who participated panel study of the Korean Child and Youth Panel Survey(KECYPS) from 2th through 5th waves. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation model analysis were conducted. In addition, the mediated effects were verified through bootstrapping and phantom variable analysis. The analysis results were as follows. First, child neglect had an significant effect on the sense of community, but child abuse did not show a significant effect. Second, both child abuse and neglect affected the sense of community through the medication of depression. Third, child neglect affected the sense of community through peer attachment, but the impact of child abuse was not significant. Finally, the results of phantom variable analysis revealed that both child abuse and neglect had an indirect effects on the sense of community through the double mediation effects of depression and peer attachment. Based on the results, policy and practical implications were discussed.
