초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the differentiation phenomenon between South and North Korean vocabulary. The researcher analyzes the unknown words of the opposite area that South and North Korean residents have indicated. In chapter 2, this study examines the characteristics of South Korean words unknown to North Korean residents. In chapter 3, the study also examines the characteristics of North Korean words unknown to South Korean residents. In chapter 4, the study analyzes the factors that differentiate two languages. The study suggests that in case of pure native words, both areas have many commonalities in every-day use languages. However, this study also attends to the differences in two languages. In North Korean, there are other words with more specified meaning. In addition, there are many socio-culturally coded native Korean words, refined languages and polysemies in North Korean. On the other hand, South Korean language includes Sino-Korean vocabulary, and they are mostly jargons and neologism originated from the political, economical, and sports field.
