Recently, expression of color has gained much more importance in the digital environment involving the computer and the internet. And with economic growth, we feel that our surrounding environment is changing into more harmonious colors. However, researches on this color harmony have been treated as professional knowledge of experts. Accordingly, everyone frequently feels trouble in selection of colors without the help of experts because they lack knowledge regarding color harmonies. To solve this problem, previous research has mainly dealt with various color recommendation systems to help users with color coordination. Likewise, experts or expert systems usually can recommend harmonious colors but they do not know which colors users prefer. For this, we propose a method of extracting color harmony based on well-known Ostwald color harmony theory such as Ostwald color harmony theory to recommend a harmonious color to a given color, and also the method of recommending binary color harmony based on user preferences to deduce what kind of harmony a user prefers. To do this, we first, for the method of extracting color harmony based on Ostwald color harmony theory, we store color information of NCS into the databases and retrieve harmonious colors for a given color by proposing a formal method to express Ostwald color harmony theory as relational algebra, which is a querying method to the relational databases. Second, for recommending binary color harmony based on user preferences, we studied a method to find out what kind of color harmony a user prefers according to each color. Also, the method has been compared with that of recommending through user survey statistics to prove that the color harmony preference forecast results of the proposed method are much more superior.
