초록
This study examines ROK’s extended deterrence posture amid shifts in U.S. security strategy under the Trump administration. Extended deterrence instruments are divided into intra-peninsular and extra-peninsular allied assets, and their interaction with ROK’s conventional capabilities is analyzed through strategic coupling and decoupling tendencies. Findings indicate that strategic coupling tendency, such as the ROK-U.S. Conventional- Nuclear Integration (CNI), can be reinforced by strategic decoupling dynamics like the strategic flexibility of U.S. Forces Korea. Even risk-laden initiatives, such as the “Golden Dome” based US-ROK missile defense integration, create opportunities for bilateral space cooperation led ROK defense space capability enhancement. The study concludes that ROK can mitigate uncertainties and advance national interests by leveraging the structure of extended deterrence instrument and the bidirectional nature of strategic coupling and decoupling tendencies within the alliance.
