초록
This study analyzes the listening styles of Korean college students. Using the Listening Styles Profile (Barker & Watson, 2000), we investigated the types of listening in Korean college students. Listening Styles Profile(LSP) was distinguished with four types of listening styles: people-, action-, content-, and time-oriented listening. Korean college students were found to show the strongest people-oriented listening and the weakest time-oriented listening. According to gender, content-oriented listening was found to be significantly stronger for male students than for female students. However, female students tend to be more people- and timeoriented than male students, but the difference was not statistically significant. In addition, we conducted a 2-step cluster analysis to determine how college students can be classified according to their listening styles. As a result, three cluster types were found to be suitable: cluster 1 “synesthetic listening type,” cluster 2 “active listening type,” and cluster 3 “informational listening type.” This analysis of listening styles allows us to understand listening attitudes, habits, and preferences according to their own characteristics. If college students are aware of their listening style, they can adjust their listening comprehension through listening training. In addition, understanding other people's listening styles will enable more effective communication. Examining college students' listening styles will help them understand their preferred listening styles and will also help them find effective listening instruction.
