초록
The study aims at searching the meanings of French conservative music in the late 19th century which does not pursue the mainstream of impressionism by focusing on Piano Sonata Op. 63 by Vincent d’Indy. The study anaylizes and evaluates the unfamiliar composer and one of his compositions. It illuminates the meanings and significance of the work in the development of French music. Vincent d’Indy is known as pursuing the German tradition which comes from J. S. Bach and L. v. Beethoven. He was also a student of the French conservative composer such as C. Franck. The study examined the similarities and influences from the late Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas. It also investigated modified features from the traditional structure including complicated features in using cyclic forms, and other characteristic changes. It concluded many modified aspects and unusual features in the context of trials which show French originality rather than the succession of German tradition in its original form. The study is significant in that it illuminates the late 19th century French conservative music which does not belong to the mainstream in a new perspective.
