초록

Jinsan Incident refers to Yun Ji-choong and Kwon Sang-yeon’s case of burning their mothers’ spirit tablets in 1791 (15th Year in King Jeong-jo’s Rule). They did not even hold ancestral rites. They were Catholics. This incident was a shock to Joseon dynasty, which was a Confucian society. This incident signifies the clash between Catholic doctrine and Confucian tradition. Catholicism was rejected from Joseon dynasty due to this incident. Jeong Joexecuted Yun Ji-choong and Kwon Sang-yeon, but he tried to minimize the implication of this incident. King Jeong-jo came to throne as the son of Prince Sado who had been killed by violence. After he ascended the throne, King Jeong-jo carried out actions to make his dead father the king as a way of realizing his filialpiety, ‘hyo’. King Jeong-jo dealt with Jinsan Incident moderately. He announced that he would establish the correct education. This showed his moderate recognition of Catholicism. However, King Jeong-jo regarded filial piety(hyo) as the most important aspect than anything else. Thus, he could never earnestly forgive the case of burning their mothers’ spirit tablets. However, he dealt with this incident calmly. The reas on why is that politicians used this incident as a way of attacking Nam-in. They tried to get rid of Chae Jae-gong by attacking him who represented Nam-in. Chae Jae-gong made exchanges with people who were involved with this incident. He was close to King Jeong-jo. King Jeong-jo appointed him to the minister. Through him, King Jeong-jo wanted to make Prince Sado, his father’s innocence official. The next step was to make Prince Sado reverent and him a king. Therefore, King Jeong-jo minimized the implication of Jinsan Incident to complete his filial piety (hyo) toward Prince Sado. Also, he maintained moderate recognition of Catholicism.
