The Validity and Reliability of Social Interest Scale

초록

This study aims to validate the validity and reliability of an instrument measuring the concept of social interest based on Adlerian theory. The Social Interest Scale used in this study, developed by Hyo-Jeong Kang and Mi-Kyoung Jin(2025) through a Delphi study to establish content validity, consists of 42 items. Therefore, this study verified the construct validity, criterion validity, and reliability of the Social Interest Scale among 473 four-year university students nationwide. The Empathy Scale, Meaning of Life Scale, and Psychological Well-being Scale were used to verify criterion validity. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 28.0 and Mplus 8.30. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed that the fit indices for a hierarchical four-factor structure—comprising one top-level factor(Social Interest) and four sub-factors(Connectedness, Contribution, Social Optimism, Altruistic Concern)—were acceptable. 18 of the 42 items were deleted, resulting in a final 24-item scale. The Social Interest Scale demonstrated criterion validity through significant positive correlations with scales measuring empathy, meaning in life, and psychological well-being. The overall internal consistency of the Social Interest Scale was α=.92. This establishes a foundation for assessing an individual's social interest and is expected to function as a tool for comprehensively evaluating the characteristics of relationships individuals form with others and their community.
